Proverbs: Wisdom in Righteousness

Part 7 in a 7 part series. View series intro and index. Over the last seven weeks, we’ve talked about Christ as the God’s wisdom and about wisdom in reproof, stewardship, friendship, and speech.  We could say so much about this wonderful book, but let’s top of our journey through Proverbs with wisdom in righteousness. We could also call this “Wisdom in Wisdom” (but that would confuse people).  Righteousness is wisdom.  Wisdom is righteousness.  Righteousness in Proverbs is different than righteousness in Romans, however.  Proverbs’ righteousness is practical obedience to God’s word.  It is the righteousness we do that arises from the … Continue reading Proverbs: Wisdom in Righteousness

Proverbs: Wisdom in Speech

Part 6 in a 7 part series. View series intro and index. Let me say this right up front: I am not the greatest example of wise speech.  I’ve stuck my foot in my mouth a few times and I have let a few foul words slip as well.  Yet in his great mercy, despite my constant failures, God is refining my tongue.  I praise him for his sanctifying and empowering grace. Proverbs has more to say about our speech than any other subject – besides the benefits of wisdom.  Indeed, this is a major theme of the Bible as well.  Luke … Continue reading Proverbs: Wisdom in Speech

Proverbs: Wisdom in Friendship

Part 5 in a 7 part series. View series intro and index. Everyone knows someone who can’t pick a good friend to save his life.  Let’s be honest. The married guy picks friends who go to the bar every night and play Xbox as he ignores his son who’s ready to play ball outside.  The married woman befriends divorced women who drink too much cheap wine and tell her it’s time for a younger man.  The kid in high school is only friends with the star quarterback because he knows the right answers to the test.   The junior high girl sits at … Continue reading Proverbs: Wisdom in Friendship

Solomon Dedicates the Temple

Part 3 of a 7 part series. View series intro and index. After Joshua led God’s people across the Jordan, Israel entered into a time of national decline. We read about in the book of Judges. In fact, everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Jg. 17:6; 21:25). It got so bad that in 1 Samuel, Israel wanted to be like the surrounding pagan nations and have a king. God gives his people a king named Saul, and after that David. Solomon succeeds his father David, and reigns over Israel during a time of great prosperity. After Solomon’s death, the … Continue reading Solomon Dedicates the Temple

Proverbs: Wisdom in Reproof

Part 3 in a 7 part series. View series intro and index. I was on a mission trip in the summer of 2006 and I left my beautiful metallic blue 1994 Mercury Tracer at home with my family. When I returned, to my chagrin, I found out that the “Blue Beast” had shock and strut problems. The damage was estimated at $1,200. The car wasn’t worth that much. It was time to buy a new car. My parent’s neighbor advised me to buy a Chevy Lumina we test drove. It was an older model. It was white with burgundy cloth interior. It … Continue reading Proverbs: Wisdom in Reproof

Proverbs: Christ the Wisdom of God

Part 2 in a 7 part series. View series intro and index. For the longest time, I thought most of the Proverbs were pithy fortune cookie sayings.  Really thought provoking, but not very practical.  As I’m reading through the book now, I’m creating categories, and it’s helping me to think the way Solomon did and contextualize his advice so I can practically apply my life to it. One category that stands alone from the rest of the book is Christ Personified. In chapter 8, Solomon writes of wisdom saying, The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of … Continue reading Proverbs: Christ the Wisdom of God
